Chief Blankets

Treasures in Wool

Since the 17th century, Navajo Chief Blankets have been prized possessions. They were commonly called "Chief Blankets" because they were expensive, and it was thought that only wealthy Natives or traders could afford them. In the mid 1800s, a Navajo Chief Blanket could be purchased for between $100 and $150. To put that in perspective, that would have been nearly a year's worth of wages for most individuals. Chief Blankets stopped being created when demand collapsed due to the arrival of machine-woven blankets brought by the railroads in the late 1800s. Now, there are few Chief Blankets remaining in good condition and they are highly collectable.

This collection includes authentic Navajo Chief Blankets from the 19th Century as well as modern revivals of the Chief Blanket designs.
