Tapis Navajo

UNE TRADITION SÉCÉCULAIRE

Tous nos tapis sont tissés par des tisserands Navajo, dont la plupart vivent traditionnellement dans la réserve Navajo située en Arizona, au Nouveau-Mexique et en Utah. Il s'agit de la plus grande réserve amérindienne du pays, avec quelque 16 millions d'acres et plus de 350 000 Navajos. Depuis les débuts du tissage par les Navajos vers 1700, le tissage a fourni un avantage économique important à la tribu et un excellent débouché pour leurs talents artistiques. Leurs tapis sont fabriqués dans la maison du tisserand ou sur des métiers à tisser verticaux en utilisant les mêmes méthodes qu'ils ont utilisées au cours des trois cents dernières années. Aujourd'hui, dans le Sud-Ouest, les Navajos sont les seuls Amérindiens à pratiquer beaucoup de tissage. Nous recevons actuellement moins de tissage que par le passé, mais la qualité est la meilleure qu'elle ait jamais été.
