Masters of Overlay

The Hopi are one of the oldest living cultures in documented history; they migrated from the south to Arizona in the 12th century. The Hopi tribe is located in Northeastern Arizona on 2,500 square miles in the middle of the Navajo Nation. Their land, called Hopitutskwa, is made up of 12 villages on three mesas. The Hopi tribe currently has around 20,000 enrolled members. Hopis are known for their colorful and traditional culture, centered around living the Hopi Way as peaceful and humble farmers in reverence of the land and its resources. Kachinas are central to their spirituality and culture. In silversmithing, Hopis are best known for their intricate overlay designs.
