Michael Grant is an amazing contemporary jeweler working out of Northern Arizona. He lives in an original 1904 home in the foothills of Jerome. He has views of the distant red rocks of Sedona, an inspiring scene for any artist.
Michael Grant is an extremely talented stone cutter, one of the finest in the country. He works only with high grade, natural materials - including very high quality American turquoise. Each bead and cabochon is meticulously shaped into a smooth perfection by hand. Some of his necklaces can contain 300-800 beads, making each piece a journey of patience and skill.
"It's labor-intensive work," he says. "I pull all-nighters sometimes and work in phases; a phase could be one solid day or five days or 30. It's the most inefficient way to make a buck," Grant laughs. "But, there's a freedom not to be hooked into someone else's rules, though there is a price to pay for that."
He admits to having a true love of natural turquoise. “Turquoise stones are like snowflakes: each stone is different, each mine is different,” he explains. “The colors, the time periods, the different matrixes provide an unlimited canvas if you keep the beads simple.”
