シェル

シェルは、アメリカ南西部のインディアンの宝石商にとって非常に伝統的な素材です。銀細工以前は、ターコイズをはめ込むためのペンダントとしてシェルが使用されていました。最も一般的なのは、バハカリフォルニアとメキシコの沖合で見られるとげのあるカキ殻 (写真) です。とげのあるカキの殻には、黄色、オレンジ、赤、紫など、さまざまな色があります。殻の色は、殻の餌と海の深さによって決まります。アーティストが使用するその他のシェルには、アワビの殻、ライオンの足、メロンの殻、マザーオブパール、そしてペンシェル。
