Phillip Honanie

Phillip Honanie (1950–2017) was a distinguished Hopi silversmith from the Bear Clan, hailing from the village of Shungopovi on Second Mesa, Arizona. He embarked on his jewelry-making journey in the mid-1960s, developing a style that seamlessly blended traditional Hopi symbolism with exceptional craftsmanship.

Honanie was renowned for his mastery of the Hopi overlay technique, wherein intricate designs are meticulously cut from one piece of silver and soldered onto another, with the recessed areas oxidized to create striking contrast. His hallmark—a pair of crescents symbolizing friendship—became a signature of his work, reflecting both his artistic identity and cultural heritage.

Throughout his career, Honanie's creations often featured motifs central to Hopi culture, such as maize/corn plants, kachinas, and sacred animals. His pieces were not only aesthetically compelling but also imbued with spiritual significance, resonating deeply within and beyond his community.
