Delfred Masawytewa, also known as “Sparks” Masawytewa, is a talented Hopi overlay jeweler. His jewelry pieces are signed SM.
Sparks was born in Keams Canyon, AZ in 1968 to Lucinda and Edward Masawytewa. He is the second youngest of seven children. Both of his parents passed away at a young age, and he was raised on Hopi Second Mesa in Mishongnovi as part of the Bear Clan. Acclaimed Hopi overlay jeweler, Berra Tawahongva, is his first cousin, but in Hopi tradition Berra was considered his second father. He was greatly inspired by the craftsmanship of Berra, and also his famous uncles, Lawrence and Paul Saufkie. They encouraged him to take classes at the Hopi Guild, so that he would be certified as a jeweler and could take his art to many places.
His jewelry is clean, precise, and never cast or drawn out ahead of time. Each piece is unique and beautiful. Sparks has three children, and his son Skylan is following in his father’s footsteps with amazing jewelry as well.
Sparks is a sincere and hard working artist. He is an important part of the Hopi community.
