Created in the late 1970s by Hopi artist Phillip Honanie (1950–2017), the Emergence Jewelry series brings the Hopi creation story to life in silver, gold, and stone. Inspired by Honanie’s 1975 painting The Beginning, these sculptural works depict figures like Māasaw, First Man, First Woman, their children, and a Kwan (One-Horn priest), all drawn from Hopi cosmology.
At the heart of the collection is an extraordinary pendant titled Emergence Jewelry, featuring a hand-carved malachite face of Māasaw, the guardian of the Fourth World. Cornmeal trails down his body toward the Sipapuni—the symbolic place of origin—linking spirit, story, and earth in a powerful visual narrative.
This rare series also includes a 1977 coral and gold First Woman pendant and multiple all-silver forms of First Man, First Woman, and their children. Nearly fifty years later, Honanie’s Emergence series remains a landmark in modern Hopi jewelry: deeply meaningful, masterfully crafted, and spiritually resonant.
