Maxwell Talahytewa is the grandson of renowned Hopi potter, Lawrence Namoki. Following in his grandfather’s footsteps, Maxwell has become a talented potter and kachina carver in his own right. Maxwell specializes in hand coiled Hopi pottery with carved designs and hand painted polychrome themes including petroglyphs and other Hopi symbols. His pottery is fired in the traditional way, outdoors in an open pit fire.
When carving Kachinas, Maxwell typically focuses on old-style or flat kachina dolls. He has a great attention to detail with both painting and his additions of shells, feathers, and leather. Maxwell has great promise as a young Hopi artist and we’re excited to see where his career takes him!
