James Freeland

James Freeland was born on April 8, 1959 in Crownpoint, New Mexico to Julia and Raymond Freeland. He has lived there his whole life.

James grew up in family rooted in Navajo tradition, and two of his brothers are medicine men. They taught him about the sacred significance of turquoise. James works with many different stones in his jewelry, but he loves to work with turquoise the most. He often uses Kingman Turquoise from Arizona.

James began his silversmithing career by first working for Gilbert Ortega and Steve Arviso with First American Traders. Throughout his career, he has focused on traditional cluster jewelry, which he has always loved. He fondly remembers his mother always wearing a squash blossom with cluster work. James creates jewelry that is timeless and high quality.

In addition to making beautiful jewelry, James and his wife Theresa raise cows, sheep and horses. They freely offer their meat to all of their extended families, especially for the ceremonies. James partakes in the traditional Yei be Chai dances (healing ceremonies) and the Native American Church.
