He began his silversmithing career in 1976, learning the overlay technique through the Hopi Silvercraft Cooperative Guild. His hallmark is a tobacco leaf symbol, representing his membership in the Hopi Tobacco clan.

Coochyumptewa's jewelry is renowned for its intricate overlay designs that reflect Hopi cultural symbols and narratives.
