Antique Yavapai (circa 1910 - 1915) Olla with a Very Unique Design Depicting Ostriches, a Fascinating Part of Arizona History. At the turn of the last century, ostrich farms in the Phoenix area along the Salt and Gila Rivers produced the beautiful feathered plumes that women wore on their fancy hats. Lucy Nelson was a highly noted Yavapai basket weaver and her work is shown at the Yavapai Tribal Museum at Fort McDowell. Lucy was best known for these vertical design motifs and with elonged human figures. Lucy Nelson must have seen an Arizona ostrich farm and incorporated the birds into this olla, which makes it nearly priceless for its uniqueness.
